Alex Ballard (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) gave IUP its lone win in singles and teamed with Emilia Osborne (Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom/Cedars ) for a doubles victory in IUP's 5-2 loss to Division I St. Bonaventure in its spring season opener Friday in Olean, N.Y.

Ballard defeated Riley Archer 6-0, 6-4 at No. 6 singles while her and Osborne posted a 9-7 win over Archer and Kathryn Kvas at No. 3 singles.  The Crimson Hawks also won at No. 2 doubles when Kelly McBryan (Grove City/Grove City) and Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) bested Manuela Marin-Salcedo and Andrea Pavlovic 9-7.

The two doubles wins gave IUP a 1-0 lead heading into the singles matches.  In Division I tennis, the three doubles matches counted as a single point going to the team that wins at least two of the three matches.

Mahto was the only other IUP player to take a set in singles, taking a lead over Kvas before falling 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.  Osborne pushed Amanda Pallikunnel in the second set in a 6-3, 7-5 loss.
