Emilia Osborne (Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom/Cedars ) won a three-set decision in the final match of the night, the No. 3 singles duel, to score a 5-4 victory over Slippery Rock in the NCAA Atlantic Regional #2 played Monday on the indoor courts at the Lakevue Athletic Club.
With the win, the Crimson Hawks (21-6) earned their first-ever berth in the national round of 16, which will be held May 11-14 in Altamonte Springs, Fla. IUP, ranked 38th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, extended its school record for most wins in a season.
Slippery Rock saw its season end with a 15-7 final record. The Rock was the defending regional champion.
Osborne lost the first set to Elisabeth Yetiskul 6-4 before taking the next two by 6-3 and 6-2 scores in the decisive match. The second set was tied at three games each before Osborne ran off nine of the final 11 games, playing through blisters on her feet that required the attention of the medical staff.
That win came after Osborne and partner
Alex Ballard (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) had won the No. 3 doubles match by an 8-3 score.
IUP held a 2-1 edge at the end of doubles competition thanks to wins by Osborne and Ballard as well as
Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) and
Kelly McBryan (Grove City/Grove City) at No. 2. Mahto and McBryan had lost twice previously in doubles to the Rock during the regular season and the quarterfinals of the PSAC tournament.
Mahto also won the No. 4 singles match by identical 6-2, 6-2 scores while PSAC West Freshman of the Year
Tabtip Louhabanjong (Krabi, Thailand/West Anchorage (AK)) claimed the No. 2 singles match by a 6-4, 7-5 score.
After IUP recorded wins in the first two doubles matches completed, Slippery Rock ran off three straight wins to take a 3-2 edge in the team scoring before the Crimson Hawks rebounded to pull out the match.
Louhabanjong's win in the No. 2 singles match knotted the team score at 4-4 and set up the winner-take-all No. 3 singles match between Osborne and Yetiskul. Louhabanjong's match ended as Osborne's final set began, leaving that match the sole focus of the remainder of the night's action.
