SHIPPENSBURG, PA -
Melissa Kornock (Hatfield/North Penn)'s goal in the 56th minute was the only one for the Crimson Hawks as IUP drew a 1-1 tie with Shippensburg in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener for both schools on Saturday afternoon.
Shippensburg attacked quickly on offense, getting off a shot just one minute into the match, but IUP's
Kelly Brennan (Middletown/Middletown) came up with the save to keep the Lady Raiders off the scoreboard.
After some back-and-forth play by both teams in the beginning of the second half, Kornock was finally able to capitalize on a pass from Michelle Grozinksy as IUP took the 1-0 lead. However, Shippensburg did not quit and after some good looks at the net, Ashley Vellucci knotted the score at one-apiece on a pass from Rachel Hess.
After 20 minutes of total overtime play, neither team was able to get the go-ahead goal. Kornock almost had the win for the Hawks in both periods of overtime but came up wide on both shots. The Crimson Hawks outshot the Lady Raiders 16-10.
IUP, ranked ninth in the NSCAA Atlantic Region, is now 1-0-1, and 0-0-1 in the PSAC. Shippensburg is now 2-1-1, and 0-0-1 PSAC.
The Hawks next game is September 14 at home against Mansfield. First kick is at 4:00 p.m. at South Campus Field.
