ERIE, PA - Danielle Ostendorf (Rockford, IL/Boylan Catholic) had 26 kills in two matches as the IUP volleyball team defeated Pitt-Johnstown and Alderson-Broaddus in PSAC-WVIAC crossover action on Satuday.
Three players on the Crimson Hawks had double-digit kills in game one, as IUP defeated Pitt-Johnstown 3-1. After dropping the first set 25-22, the Crimson Hawks responded nicely and won the next three sets 33-31, 25-22 and 25-20. Ostendorf led IUP with 17 kills, while Briana Balcik (Pittsburgh/Plum) added 11 kills.
Beth Sova had 10 kills for the Crimson Hawks, and Carissa Miara (Pittsburgh/West Allegheny) led the team in assists with 51.
On defense, Emily Vaughn (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) led the team in digs with 28, while Balcik (12) and Lauren Hester (State College, Pa. /State College) (11) also notched double-digit digs.
In game two, Ostendorf and Sova both had nine kills as the Crimson Hawks rolled to a 3-1 win over Alderson-Broaddus. Brook Bailey added eight kills in the game, while Miara once again led IUP in assists with 39. The Crimson Hawks came out on fire, winning the first two sets 25-14 and 25-17. After dropping the third set 25-22, IUP rebounded and won the fourth set 25-20.
Defensively, Vaughn had a team-high 27 digs, while Stacey Root (York/Spring Grove) had 19. Brooke Bailey (Clarion, Pa. /Clarion) added 14 digs for the Crimson Hawks, and Root had six service aces.
IUP finished the weekend with a record of 3-1 after splitting a pair of games on Friday. The Crimson Hawks lost to West Virginia Wesleyan by a score of 3-1 in game one, but defeated Seton Hill 3-1 in game two. IUP is back in action Tuesday when they travel to Charleston.
