CHARLESTON, WV – IUP fell in three sets to the University of Charleston in a non-conference volleyball matchup on Tuesday night in West Virginia.
The Crimson Hawks (6-3) lost 25-15, 25-16 and 25-18.
After falling down 2-0 in set one, the Crimson Hawks went back-and-forth with Charleston before going down by six at 15-9. IUP then reeled off four straight points, capped by a block from Megan Cerveny and Beth Sova to bring the Crimson Hawks deficit back to two at 15-13.
Charleston then scored 10 of the next 12 points to take the set win.
After getting down by six in set two, IUP used another rally to get to within one at 14-13. Charleston then scored five of seven points, then the final six to get the nine-point win.
Set three included runs by each team at the beginning, with IUP holding a 6-4 lead early. After coming back to take a 10-6 lead, Charleston chipped away an ultimately took the third set and the sweep.
Lauren Hester (State College, Pa. /State College) led IUP's offense with seven kills while Sova added six and
Carissa Miara (Pittsburgh/West Allegheny) posted 18 assists. Defensively,
Emily Vaughn (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) had 17 digs with Hester adding 12.
The Crimson Hawks are set to host a PSAC crossover this weekend, as IUP opens up the Kovalchick Complex with matches against Cheyney at 11:30 a.m. and West Chester at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
