IUP Volleyball Falls to West Chester in Four

INDIANA, PA – Lauren Hester (State College, Pa. /State College) finished with 14 kills and 15 digs while Danielle Ostendorf (Rockford, IL/Boylan Catholic) added 17 kills but IUP accumulated too many errors as the Crimson Hawks fell to West Chester in four sets on the second day of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover action on Saturday at the Kovalchick Complex.

The opening set went back-and-forth, as neither team led by more than four points at any time. IUP (7-5, 1-2) took that four-point lead after an Ostendorf kill to go up 14-10. West Chester then rallied, knotting the set at 18-apiece before going up 20-19 a few points later.

The Golden Rams (8-6, 1-3) then held a 23-22 lead, before another Ostendorf kill and two attacking errors gave the Crimson Hawks the 25-23 opening set win.

IUP jumped on top in the second set, taking a 9-5 lead after a trick by Carissa Miara (Pittsburgh/West Allegheny). Back-to-back kills by Ostendorf and Hester put the Crimson Hawks up 14-9, but West Chester slowly chipped away, tying the set at 16 before going up 20-18.

The Golden Rams then took a 24-21 lead, but IUP was able to extend the game with three straight points, including a huge kill by Hester to tie the score at 24-all. The Crimson Hawks weren't able to hang on though, and after two ties, fell 28-26.

IUP led 4-3 in set three, before West Chester took over, going up by as many as eight points before winning 25-20. The Crimson Hawks also led in the fourth, going on top 10-9, but the Golden Rams fought to take a 16-12 lead and eventually winning 25-19.

Cara Reese had 16 kills for West Chester, while Helen Fitzpatrick had 30 assists and Lisa Campbell added 24 digs.

Emily Vaughn (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) led the defensive effort for IUP with 32 digs, with Stacey Root (York/Spring Grove) and Hester each adding 17. Assisting Ostendorf and Hester on the offensive end was Miara, who had 44 assists.

The Crimson Hawks remain home as they welcome rival Cal on Tuesday. Opening serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
