ERIE, PA – Despite another 10-kill performance from
Danielle Ostendorf (Rockford, IL/Boylan Catholic), IUP lost to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division leader Gannon in three sets in volleyball action on Friday evening in Erie.
The Crimson Hawks fell behind early in the opening set, but fought back to take a 4-3 lead after back-to-back errors by Gannon. The Golden Knights then reeled five of the next six points to take an 8-5 lead.
IUP then went on a run of its own, getting kills from
Carly Kowalski (Corry/Corry) and
Lauren Hester (State College, Pa. /State College), along with an ace from Kowalski to knot the set at nine-apiece.
After Gannon battled back to take a 16-14 lead, the Golden Knights finished off the set on a huge run, scoring nine of the last 10 points to win 25-15.
The Crimson Hawks didn't get much going in set two, falling behind 13-1, before scoring three of four points, with two coming off kills from Ostendorf. After bringing their deficit back to 10 at 16-6, the Crimson Hawks nine of the last 13 points to fall 25-10.
IUP would fall behind 11-6 in set three, before Gannon went on a 6-2 run to take a 17-8 lead. The Crimson Hawks would then chip away at the Golden Knights lead, getting kills from Hester, Beth Sova and
Carissa Miara (Pittsburgh/West Allegheny) to cut it to six at 21-15.
After a point by Gannon, IUP went off for five straight points, getting the score to 22-20. That's where the Golden Knights would finish it off, scoring three of the last four to win 25-21, taking the match in three.
Miara had 18 assists for the Crimson Hawks while
Emily Vaughn (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) picked up 13 digs.
The Crimson Hawks (7-10, 1-5) stay in Erie tonight and will play Mercyhurst tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
