FORT LAUDERDALE, FL - The IUP men's and women's swim teams faced tough competition in their return to the pool, competing against Florida Atlantic and Western Kentucky along with event host Nova Southeastern in a quad meet in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday afternoon.
Nova Southeastern's men are ranked 13th in the nation while the women are 11th; Florida Atlantic and Western Kentucky are both Division I programs.
The big performance on the men's side came from
Brandon Hopkins (Marion, VA/Marion), who turned in a time of 10:01.76 in the 1000 freestyle, the second best time on the team in that event this season. That time is less than one second off his best time of the year, a 10:00.84 he swam back on November 11, which is the second best time in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
On the women's side,
Ashley McAteer (Irwin/Penn-Trafford) finished third in the 50 free with a time of 25.03, 1.38 off her season-best and NCAA "B" cut time, while Ally Mitidieri finished fourth in the 100 breast with a 1:09.78, :04.47 off of her school-record time she set earlier this year.
The Crimson Hawks continue to prepare for the PSAC championships with just two more events remaining. Next up is a dual meet at Shippensburg on January 21.
