Box Score

INDIANA, PA - Sarah Pastorek (Johnstown/Bishop McCort) recorded her third double-double of the year with 15 points and a career-high 18 rebounds, leading four Crimson Hawks who scored in double-figures as 21st-ranked IUP closed out Cal on a 17-7 run to defeat the Vulcans 62-43 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division women's basketball rivalry matchup on Wednesday night at the Kovalchick Complex.

After a back-and-forth first three minutes that saw that game tied at 4-4, a pair of free throws by Talen Watson (Odenton, MD/Arundel) jump started a 19-2 run to open the Crimson Hawks (12-1, 8-1) lead to 17 points at 23-6 nearly halfway into the half. The streak included six points by Pastorek and a pair of threes by Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center).

The Vulcans cut their deficit to 11 with field goals on three of the next four trips down the floor before a three-pointer by Watson stopped the six-point run and keep IUP's lead at 26-12 with 7:37 remaining. Cal would again cut the Crimson Hawks lead to 10, getting layups from Emma Mahady and Amy Johns to close out the half as IUP took a 30-20 lead into the break.

Cal got it to eight early in the second but a layup-and-one by Watson got the Crimson Hawks lead back to 11. The Vulcans then scored the next seven points, including a three-ball by Johns and a pair of free throws by Chelsea McKnight to get to within four at 35-31 with 16:04 left in the game.

The Crimson Hawks responded with a three by Fairman, her third of the game, followed by a jumper by Lisa Burton (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Penn Hills) and another traditional three-point play by Watson to jump back on top of Cal by 12 points at 43-31 less than six minutes later. The Vulcans came back with another three by Johns to cut it to nine and again got their deficit back to nine points with 9:33 remaining before IUP finished the game on that 17-7 run to finish off Cal.

Johns had a game-high 18 points for the Vulcans, who dropped to 8-5, 5-4 in PSAC play. Selena Adamshick grabbed 12 rebounds for Cal, which shot just 29.5 percent from the field and turned the ball over 17 times.

Along with Pastorek's 15 points, Watson, Fairman and Burton each scored 13 points, combining to shoot 13-of-22 from the field. Fairman went 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, adding five rebounds and three assists in 29 minutes. Watson went a perfect 4-of-4 at the line and grabbed three rebounds in 24 minues while Burton came off the bench and went 5-of-7 from the field in 20 minutes of action. Each of those point totals were career-highs for Watson, Fairman and Burton.

The Crimson Hawks hit the road for the first time since December 10 when they play at Clarion this Saturday evening. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
