IUP Goes Undefeated at Crimson Hawk Invite

Day 1 Story

INDIANA, PA – Both the men's and women's IUP swim teams finished 2-0 at the Crimson Hawk Invite as 21 different qualifying times were achieved on day two, finishing up a very successful weekend for the Crimson Hawks at the John A. Pidgeon Natatorium on Saturday.

The women defeated visiting Bloomsburg 246-142 and Gannon 252-135. The men blew past the Huskies 298-86 and the Golden Knights 228.50-161.50.

Six different IUP women hit Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying marks, including All-American Jackie Hynson (King George, VA/King George), who had three. She raced to a time of 1:00.59 in the 100 fly on Saturday morning, following that up with times of 2:11.58 and 2:14.15 in the 200 back and 200 fly, respectively. All three times were good enough for first place.

Christina Janosky (Dover, Pa. /Dover ) and Allyson Mitidieri (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) hit two PSAC qualifying marks on Saturday as well, while Ally Long (Frederick, MD/Frederick), Emily Shumaker (Carlisle/Big Spring) and Kala Misavage (Danville/Danville) each had one qualifying time. Janosky and Long each hit good times in the 1000 free, finishing in 10:52.28 and 10:57.88, respectively, as Mitidieri had her times in the 400 IM (4:40.26) and the 200 breast (2:28.64).

Janosky had her other qualifying time in the 200 free (2:00.35), while Shumaker had hers in the 100 free (54.72) and Misavage in the 200 fly (2:18.79).

On the men also had six different swimmers reach qualifying times, with Brandon Hopkins (Marion, VA/Marion) getting three, including the 400 IM (4:16.20), 1000 free (10:00.90) and the 200 breast (2:15.69).

Steve Long (Greensburg/Hempfield) had the lone NCAA “B” cut time of the day, finishing with a time of 50.89 in the 100 fly. He also scored a 1:57.04 in the 200 fly, a PSAC qualifying time.

Doug McWhorter (Charlottesville, VA/Broadneck) and Walter Smith (Annandale, VA/Annandale) both finished with a pair of conference qualifying times, both in the 100 and 200 free. McWhorter recorded times of 49.04 and 1:49.05, respectively in the two races while Smith had times of 49.11 and 1:49.08.

Anthony Termin (Enola/Cumberland Valley) and Matt Nakagama (Columbia, MD/Atholton) had the other two qualifying times for the Crimson Hawks, with Termin finishing with a time of 1:46.96 in the 200 free and Nakagama recorded a time of 17:24.65 in the 1650 free time trial.

This was the final action for IUP before the 2012 PSAC Championships in Mechanicsburg February 16-19.
