McCormick and McFail Win Respective Draws During Successful Weekend for IUP

ST. BONAVENTURE, NY – Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) and Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) won the “B” and “C” draws respectively as the IUP women's tennis team wrapped up a good weekend at the St. Bonaventure Fall Classic in New York.

The Crimson Hawks were the only Division II team competing against three Division I squads, as IUP went a combined 15-6 in singles action and 6-3 on the doubles side. Also competing this weekend were Youngstown State, Niagara and host St. Bonaventure.

The weekend started with round robin doubles action on Friday, as the No. 2 team of Katie Eaton (Halesowen, United Kingdom/Haybridge) and Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) went a perfect 3-0. Their wins came over Taylor Cole and Kathryn Kvas of SBU, 8-6; Lauren Hankle and Annina Brendel of YSU, 8-3; and Iva Celan and Viki Sardellitti of Niagara, 8-1.

McCormick and McFail went at No. 3 for IUP, going 2-1 on Friday with wins over Rachel Zilka and Jenna McCune of Niagara 8-2; and Gimena Puppo  of YSU and IUP's own Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) 8-4. They fell to YSU's Tijana Raicevic and Carolyn Jesko 9-7.

Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and Emilia Osborne (Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom/Cedars ) went 1-2 playing at No. 1, defeating Hilary Hansen and Ashley Ta from Niagara 8-3. Their losses came to Marta Burak and Margarita Sadovnikova of YSU 8-3 and Marissa Brossard and Fatya Amiri of SBU 8-4.

The singles draws were played on Saturday and Sunday in eight-game pro sets and forced indoors due to weather. McCormick went a perfect 3-0 en route to her “B” title, defeating Hankle 8-1 and Kvas 8-3 on Saturday before winning the championship with an 8-6 win over Brendel.

McFail also went 3-0 as she won the “C” championship, first winning a tight 9-7 battle of Raicevic 9-7 before defeating Mahto 8-4 and Jesko in the title match 8-3.

Playing in the “A” draw were Timko and Eaton, who went a combined 3-3 on the weekend. Timko lost to Amiri 8-4 before defeating Ta 8-5 and Hansen 9-8. Eaton lost to Sadovnikova 8-4 and Hansen 8-4, later defeating Ta 8-5.

Also playing in the “B” draw was Osborne, who beat Celan 8-3 before losing to Brendel 8-2. She ended her weekend with an 8-3 victory over Kvas.

Mahto and Schnaas each went 2-1 playing in the “C” draw, as Mahto easily defeated Zilka 8-0 beore losing to teammate McFail 8-4. She followed that up with an 8-5 victory over Puppo, her doubles teammate, 8-5. Schnaas fell to Puppo 9-8 before rallying to defeat a pair of players from Niagara 8-1, first Taylor Cochran than Zilka.

In all, IUP went a perfect 7-0 in its Sunday matches, including the titles by McCormick and McFail.

This wraps up a successful fall season for the Crimson Hawks, who are scheduled to be back in action in March.
