Crimson Hawks Fall to Gannon in Three Sets

INDIANA, PA – Sarah Smiley (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington) and Morgan Cerveny (Richfield, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) each tallied a team-high seven kills, but the IUP volleyball team was unable to pull off a major upset, falling 3-0 to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West rival Gannon Friday night.

The Crimson Hawks had a chance to steal the first set, ripping off three straight points to tie it at 24-24, but a kill from Lauren Sazama and a Morgan Walters ace would seal the 26-24 win for the Golden Knights.

IUP would mount another late rally in the second set thanks to a pair of Gannon errors and a kill from Smiley, but the Golden Knights would once rip off two consecutive points to take the second set 25-22.

Cerveny and Smiley both led the way with seven kills on the night, while Cerveny added a pair of blocks. Meghan Schneider (Lake Geneva, Wis. /Big Foot) chipped in four kills and two blocks for IUP, while Elizabeth Sova (Myerstown, Pa. /ELCO) added three kills and two blocks. Sarah Alman (Indiana/Indiana) notched a team-high 20 assists, while Kelly Barnes (Inver Grove Heights, MN/Simley) led the Crimson Hawks in digs with 21.

With the loss IUP falls to 18-12, 6-8 in the PSAC West, while Gannon improves to 20-4, 12-2 in the western division.

The Crimson Hawks are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host Edinboro in their annual Make-A-Wish and East Pike Elementary night. First Serve is set for 4:00 p.m.
