INDIANA, PA - After two periods of overtime,
Brittney Kuhns (Middleburg, Pa. /Midd-West)' breakaway goal with five seconds left gave IUP women's soccer a 2-1 victory over Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to kick-off the Crimson Hawks honored two seniors on their Senior Day:
Sharee McCarty (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley) and
Kelly Faller (Lancaster/Manheim Twp.).
Clarion took control early in the first half with a clear shot at the goal from Lauren Barbour as she found the back of the net to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0. That goal would be the Golden Eagles only shot on goal during the first half of play.
Tonya Fabian (Pittsburgh/Thomas Jefferson) would pressure Clarion goalie Laura Saussol but would come up short, hitting the goal post. It was Kuhns who would put the Hawks on the board off a smooth pass from
Kelsey Fisher (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove) to finally tie up the game at 1-1.
After much back-and-forth during the second half neither team was able to find the back of the net, as IUP outshot Clarion 8-3 the entire second half. Fabian and Kuhns would continue to try and put IUP on top but theGolden Eagles defense continued to pressure IUP away from the goal.
During the first overtime neither team was able to capitalize on any playmaking situations, ending the 10 minutes without any shots. Play became intense in the second overtime as Clarion would have one shot to IUP's three on goal. It wasn't until the final five seconds, that Kuhns would get a breakaway from the Clarion defense and would end the game as it went past Saussol.
The Crimson Hawks now 9-5-4 and 6-5-4 in PSAC-West, await for PSAC tournament seedings, will either play California or West Chester weather permitting on Tuesday October 30.
