IUP Comes Close in Three-Set Loss to Clarion

CLARION, PA – The Crimson Hawks were edged in both the first and third sets as IUP fell to Clarion 3-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West women's volleyball action on Friday night.

Clarion squeaked out a 27-25 win in the first set and 25-23 win in the third, while also winning 25-13 in the second set.

The opening set had its share of ties and lead changes, with IUP holding 8-7 and 14-13 leads. The set was then tied five more times before kills by Lauren Hester (State College, Pa. /State College) and Morgan Cerveny (Richfield, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) knotted the score at 22-22. Both teams took turns with the lead, first Clarion at 23-22 then IUP at 24-23 before the score was tied again at 25-25.

It was there that Clarion finished off the set with a pair of points to win 27-25.

The Golden Eagles (23-7, 13-3) took control early in the second set, going up 6-1 then later 10-2. The Crimson Hawks narrowed the gap to six at 13-7 before a 7-0 run by Clarion put it out of reach before finishing of the 12-point second set victory.

Clarion again jumped out to an early lead at 5-1 in the third set until the Crimson Hawks clawed their way back into it with an 8-4 run to tie the score at 9-9. The Golden Eagles went back on top at 13-10 before errors allowed IUP to go on a 4-1 run and tie the score again at 14-14.

Both teams would trade runs, including a pair of four-pointers as Clarion took a 20-18 lead before a serving error made it a one-point game. Clarion got it back to a two-point lead but IUP came back with three straight points, getting a kill by Elizabeth Sova (Myerstown, Pa. /ELCO) and an ace by Kelly Barnes (Inver Grove Heights, MN/Simley) to take a 22-21 lead.

The Golden Eagles responded with three straight points of their own, going on a 4-1 run to finish off the set and the match.

Cerveny lead IUP with seven kills while three other players had at least four. Sarah Alman (Indiana/Indiana) had 11 assists on the night while Barnes finished with 13 digs and Sova had four block assists.

The Crimson Hawks (19-13, 7-9) are back in action tomorrow afternoon at Slippery Rock.
