AT A GLANCE
IUP will open its 2012-13 regular season in Fairmont, West Virginia as it participates in the PSAC/WVIAC Challenge hosted by Fairmont State. The Crimson Hawks will face Concord on Friday afternoon at 1:00 PM before playing Fairmont State at 4:00 PM on Saturday.
PSAC PRESEASON POLL
IUP has been picked to finish 3rd in the powerful PSAC West when the preseason coaches' poll was released on Oct. 25. Defending conference champion Edinboro sits atop the
division with 6 first place votes while Gannon, which IUP defeated twice last year, received 1 first place vote and came in second. Bloomsburg, which also fell to the Crimson Hawks twice last season, was picked to repeat in the East.
THE HEAD COACH
Jeff Dow (Oregon, '88) enters his fifth season as the head coach of the IUP women's basketball program after leading the Crimson Hawks to a record of 23-7, 17-5 in the PSAC, and an appearance in the Atlantic Region Semifinals a season ago. Already one of the most successful coaches in IUP history, Dow has a record of 85-31 and has led the Crimson Hawks to four consecutive PSAC tournament appearances during his tenure. Last season, Dow led IUP to the PSAC Semifinals for the first time since 2008-09.
Dow has a career coaching record of 198-97 with previous stops at Anderson, Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas-San Antonio.
PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN
After earning honorable mention honors after the 2011-12 season, Sr. F
Sarah Pastorek (Johnstown/Bishop McCort) enters her final year as a Division II Bulletin Preseason All-American selection. Just 15 points shy of the 1,000 point milestone, Pastorek is a two-time All-PSAC West pick and was the division's freshman of the year in 2010.
WHO'S BACK
The Crimson Hawks return a host of experience from last year's Atlantic Region semifinalist team, including 5 starters and 3 others who played extensive minutes. In addition to Pastorek, So. G's
Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) and
Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) also come back in addition to starters So. F
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) and Jr. G
Talen Watson (Odenton, MD/Arundel). Bench players who saw a lot of time last year are So. G
Lisa Burton (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Penn Hills) and
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) along with Jr. F
Melanie Todd (Springfield, VA/West Springfield).
THE NEWCOMERS
IUP welcomes six newcomers including five true freshmen and one transfer. That transfer is So. G/F
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep), who impressed at Mercyhurst a season ago by averaging 10.0 pts/game in under 14 min/game off the bench.
Amy Graham (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) and
Anna Janisch (Glenmore/Kimberton Waldorf) are tall post players who will look for some time while wings
Alexis Aiken (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Allegheny) and Zhané Brooks will add a ton of depth and
Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic) will bring a lot of quickness to the point.
