CHEYNEY, PA –
Talen Watson (Odenton, MD/Arundel) scored 14 points to lead four players in double-figures as the 19th-ranked IUP women's basketball team defeated Cheyney 81-39 on Saturday in the conference opener for both teams.
The win makes the Crimson Hawks 5-0 on the season as they opened up a huge 48-13 lead on Cheyney at the break.
Watson's season-high came on 4-of-6 shooting, including 2-of-3 from three-point range.
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) had 13 points and seven rebounds while
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) notched a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds in just 13 minutes off the bench.
Alexis Aiken (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Allegheny) was the fourth IUP player in double figures with 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting in 12 reserve minutes.
After the Wolves (0-2, 0-1) made the first basket of the game, IUP scored the next 21 points to complete take over the game in the early going. The 21-0 run came over an 8:07 span as six different Crimson Hawks contributed. The biggest output came from Stoner, who scored 10 points, all consecutively.
IUP extended its lead after a Cheyney basket ended the run, scoring the next 11 points, capped by a three-pointer by Watson to take a 32-4 advantage with 7:29 left in the half.
Another three by Watson, along with triples from
Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) and Stamp helped give IUP a 44-10 lead with just over three minutes left in the half. Stamp would add three more free throws along with one from Stoner to give the Crimson Hawks their 35-point halftime lead.
IUP went on a 15-5 run to start the second half, with a jumper by Aiken giving the Crimson Hawks a 63-18 lead at the 12:11 mark.
The Wolves fought back to narrow their deficit to 38 late in the half but IUP scored the final four points to double up Cheyney.
The Crimson Hawks forced 37 turnovers and outrebounded Cheyney 39-27. They shot 44.6 percent from the field and made 24-of-36 foul shots.
IUP will travel across the Northeast Extension on Sunday to face West Chester. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
