WEST CHESTER, PA – A career-high of 21 points from
Talen Watson (Odenton, MD/Arundel) led five players in double-figures as 19th-ranked IUP cruised past West Chester 94-65 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) women's basketball action on Sunday.
The Crimson Hawks shot an impressive 55 percent from the floor as Watson knocked down 8-of-10 shots, including 4-of-5 from three-point range.
IUP also connected on 11-of-16 from beyond the arc as a team, outrebounded the Golden Rams 44-34, and forced 22 turnovers.
In addition to Watson's 21 points, IUP got season-highs of 19 points from
Sarah Pastorek (Johnstown/Bishop McCort), 18 points from
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) and 14 points from
Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana).
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) also posted her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
West Chester (3-2, 0-2) grabbed an early 5-2 lead after a three by Jasmen Clark but the Crimson Hawks scored the game's next nine straight points to go on top 11-5 at the 16:08 mark in the first half.
The Rams rallied to narrow their deficit to one less than three minutes later but a 13-5 run by the Crimson Hawks, capped off by a three from Stamp, gave IUP a 26-17 lead with 10:20 left.
Again the Rams narrowed IUP's lead, making it a 26-23 game before the Crimson Hawks exploded, taking complete control of the game. IUP went on to score the next 20 points, with Watson responsible for eight points while another five came from Pastorek as the Crimson Hawks went on top 46-23 with 3:20 left before halftime.
IUP would take a 51-30 lead into the break.
West Chester played evenly with IUP at the start of the second half but a 15-9 run by the Crimson Hawks made it a 72-47 after a Mathe layup with 11:50 left.
The Crimson Hawks then built their lead to as many as 32 points over the last few minutes, outscoring the Rams 43-35 in the second half for the 29-point win.
IUP limited the Rams to a 37 percent (24-of-65) field goal percentage for the game. All 13 Crimson Hawks saw action while nine got in the scoring column.
Stamp grabbed eight rebounds to go along with her 18 points in 28 minutes off the bench. Mathe made all three of her three-point attempts and had five assists while Pastorek added seven rebounds and four assists.
The Crimson Hawks move to 6-0 overall, 2-0 in the PSAC as they prepare for a huge big showdown with No. 11 Gannon on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Erie.
