AT A GLANCE
IUP returns to the state of Florida for the first time since the start of 2007 as the Crimson Hawks play in the Rollins Holiday Classic in Winter Park on December 29 and 30. IUP will play Cedarville on Saturday night before playing the hosts, 23rd-ranked Rollins on Sunday.
LAST TIME OUT
The Crimson Hawks scored two wins in their PSAC crossover action a week and a half ago, defeating No. 22 Bloomsburg 68-54 on Dec. 18 before cruising past Mansfield 64-44 the following night. Sr. F
Sarah Pastorek (Johnstown/Bishop McCort) led the way against the Huskies with 20 points and 7 rebounds while Fr. G
Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic) had a breakout game against Mansfield with 14 points and no turnovers in 33 minutes.
SOMETHING NEW
This will be the first time in its history that IUP has faced both Cedarville and Rollins. A transitioning member to Division II, Cedarville belongs to the new Great Midwest Athletic Conference while Rollins is a traditional women's basketball power that advanced to the Elite Eight a season ago.
NCAA RANKINGS
The Crimson Hawks head into the Holiday Classic ranked 12th in the nation, their highest ranking since showing up at No. 10 on Feb. 17, 2009. The matchup with Rollins will be IUP's third game in its last five against a ranked school, falling at then-10th-ranked Gannon 69-58 before defeating 22nd-ranked Bloomsburg.
CLIMBING THE LADDER
One of the most dominant players in IUP history, Pastorek sits in 18th place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,094 points. Currently on pace to break into the top five this year, Pastorek is 30 points away from passing Katie Glaws (2003-07) for 17th on the list.
WINNING WITH DEFENSE
As of Dec. 16, the Crimson Hawks are ranked 3rd in Division II by allowing just 47.3 points per game. That number won't go up much after allowing just 54 and 44 points in their last two contests. IUP racks up nearly 13 steals a game and forces opponents to shoot just 34.4 percent from the floor.
THE HEAD COACH
Jeff Dow (Oregon, '88) enters his fifth season as the head coach at IUP after leading the Crimson Hawks to a record of 23-7 (17-5 PSAC) and an appearance in the Atlantic Region Semifinals a season ago. Earlier this season, Dow eclipsed 200 wins in his head coaching career and has a career record of 206-98.
