PITTSBURGH, PA – IUP fell to Carnegie Mellon 9-0 in the 2012 women's tennis spring season opener for the Crimson Hawks at Alpha Tennis & Fitness in Pittsburgh on Saturday.
After taking all three doubles matches, Carnegie Mellon, ranked 13th nationally in Division III, won the first and third singles matches in two sets to take the victory.
In doubles action, the Tartans took the second spot as
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and Emilia Osbourne lost to Katie Cecil and Chelsea Motie 8-1 before
Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) and Erika Schnass dropped third doubles to Bryn Raschke and Angela Pratt 8-3.
Tabtip Louhabanjong (Krabi, Thailand/West Anchorage (AK)) and
Katie Eaton (Halesowen, United Kingdom/Haybridge) then dropped first doubles to Laura Chen and Courtney Chin by a score of 8-5.
On the singles side, Timko fell at number three 6-1, 6-0 to Cecil before Chen's 6-3, 7-5 win over Lougabanjong at number one clinched the match for the Tartans.
Eaton went three sets at number two, beating Chin 6-4 in the first before losing 6-4, 6-3. Emilia Osbourne also went the full three sets at the fourth spot, winning the first 6-2 before dropping sets two and three 6-0, 10-7. to Pratt.
Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) fell to Clare DuBrin 6-3, 6-1 at number five while Schnass lost to Cze-Ja Tam at number six 3-6, 6-4, 10-5.
The loss was the first of the 2011-12 year for the Crimson Hawks, as they fall to 3-1 on the year.
IUP returns to the court next weekend as the Crimson Hawks go on a three-day tour of New York, battling St. Bonaventure on Friday, Colgate on Saturday, and wrap up with a trip to Niagara on Sunday.
