NORTH TONAWANDA, NY –
Katie Eaton (Halesowen, United Kingdom/Haybridge) picked up the clinching win as IUP wrapped up its three-match road trip to New York with a 5-2 victory at Niagara in a non-conference women's tennis match on Sunday.
Eaton went 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 in her win at number two over Iva Celan, one of four singles wins for the Crimson Hawks, who are now 5-2 on the year.
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) also picked up a victory in singles action, defeating Ashley Ta 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) at number three.
Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) and
Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) also brought home victories, at McCormick beat Viki Sardellitti 6-1, 6-0 at number five and Mahto won 6-0, 6-2 at six over Rachel Zilka.
IUP swept doubles to earn the first point of the day, as Eaton paired with
Tabtip Louhabanjong (Krabi, Thailand/West Anchorage (AK)) for an 8-4 win at number one over Celan and Hilary Hansen. Timko and
Emilia Osborne (Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom/Cedars ) had an 8-1 victory at number two over Ta and Maria Ortiz while McCormick and Erika Schaas had another easy 8-1 win at third doubles over Zilka and Jenna McCune.
The Crimson Hawks finished their weekend trip with a 2-1 record over Division I schools, their first victories over teams from the higher division since the 1990s. Louhabanjong and Eaton went 3-0 at the number one doubles spot while Schaas also had a successful weekend, going a combined 5-0.
The Crimson Hawks are back in action over spring break with five matches in six days down South.
