HILTON HEAD, SC - The 29th-ranked Crimson Hawks won five of six singles matchups as IUP started its spring break trip with a 6-3 win over Denison in a non-conference women's tennis matchup on Sunday in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
The Big Red, the sixth-ranked team in Division III, got up on IUP early in doubles competition with two of the three wins, including one at number one.
Sarah Short and Alex Marcell got that win at first doubles over IUP's
Tabtip Louhabanjong (Krabi, Thailand/West Anchorage (AK)) and
Katie Eaton (Halesowen, United Kingdom/Haybridge) 8-5, while Denison also picked up a victory at number three as Courtney Steiner and Lilianna Broussalian defeated
Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) and
Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) 8-5. The Crimson Hawks did rebound as the team of
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and Emilia Osbourne took down Kate Westenberger and Heather Abzug 8-4 at second doubles.
The Crimson Hawks then flew through Denison in singles action, winning five of the six matches to rally from one down and easily defeat the Big Red.
In the first spot, Louhabanjong came back from a 6-2 loss in the first set to defeat 7-5, 10-7 for the win. Timko picked up another win for IUP at number three, defeating Westenberger 7-5, 6-4, while Osbourne picked up the win at number four, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) over Broussilian.
Also winning for IUP in singles action were
Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) at five and Schnaas at six. McCormick defeated Abzug 6-1, 6-2 while Schnaas' win was over Steiner, 7-5, 6-3.
The Crimson Hawks, now 6-2, will play Flagler on Monday.
