INDIANA, PA - The Crimson Hawks extended two singles matches to three sets, playing Cal extremely tough throughout, but No. 41 IUP ultimately fell to the eighth-ranked Vulcans 9-0 in a battle between the top two women's tennis teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and the Atlantic Region on Sunday afternoon.
In doubles action, Cal swept the three matches in order 1-2-3, as Martina Rubesova and Franziska Steinhardt defeated IUP's
Tabtip Louhabanjong (Krabi, Thailand/West Anchorage (AK)) and
Katie Eaton (Halesowen, United Kingdom/Haybridge) 8-2 at number one.
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and
Emilia Osborne (Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom/Cedars ) came up just shy at number two with an 8-5 loss to Annabel Pieschl and Jade Pondicas while Cal's Anastassiya Zherdeva and Jolien Borrenberghs got an 8-4 win over Ericka Schnaas and
Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) at number three.
The Vulcans featured two nationally-ranked doubles teams as Rubesova and Steinhardt are fifth in Division II and Pieschl and Pondicas are 16th.
In singles play, Louhabanjong fell to Rubesova, who is ranked 12th in the nation, 6-1, 6-0 at number one. The Vulcans then picked up wins at two and three by Pieschl (41st in nation) and Pondicas (42nd), who defeated Timko and Eaton 6-2, 6-0 and 6-4, 6-0, respectively.
Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) took Zherdeva to three sets in the fourth spot, almost pulling it out with a 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 loss. Schnaas also went a full three sets with Borrenberghs at number six, losing 6-4, 4-6, 10-4. Cal picked up its other win at number five as Oborne fell to Steinhardt 6-0, 7-5.
The Crimson Hawks (11-6, 1-1) return to the courts on Monday when they travel to Edinboro to take on the Fighting Scots in a match originally scheduled for last Friday. Start time is set for 4:00 p.m.
