Women's Tennis Wins a Pair on Thursday

INDIANA, PA - Katie Eaton (Halesowen, United Kingdom/Haybridge), Emilia Osborne (Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom/Cedars ) and Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) each won four matches as No. 41 IUP blanked Grove City 9-0 and cruised past West Liberty 8-1 on Thursday afternoon at the Maple Street Courts.

The Crimson Hawks had an easy time in doubles action with Grove City, as Tabtip Louhabanjong (Krabi, Thailand/West Anchorage (AK)) and Eaton defeated Stacy Moon and Megan Bennett 8-3 at number one and Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and Osborne won 8-1 at number two over Caroline McGuire and Reena Barnett.

Schnaas and and Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) picked up IUP's third win, defeating Christina Bedi and Lauren Troxel 8-1 at number three.

IUP also cruised in single play, as Eaton and Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) each had 6-0, 6-0 wins, defeating Bennett and Redi at two and three, respectively.

At four, Osborne defeated Barnett 6-0, 6-1 while Mahto won 6-1, 6-0 over Emily Buurma at six. Bumping up to number one, Timko defeated Moon 6-2, 6-1. Schnaas rallied after a 6-4 first set loss to defeat McGuire in three full sets, winning 6-0 and 10-6 in the superbreaker.

Against West Liberty, the sixth-ranked team in the Atlantic Region, the Crimson Hawks again cruised in jumping out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play.

Louhabanjong and Eaton picked up a big regionally-ranked matchup victory with Lauren Howard and Raissa Wischi at number one, winning 8-1. The IUP duo is ninth while Howard and Wischi came in ranked seventh.

Timko and Osborne got another win at two, defeating Emma Windsor and Alex Barr 8-2 while Schnaas and Mahto blanked Christina Pauley and Sarah Howells 8-0 at three.

IUP got the best of West Liberty in two of the three singles matchups featuring two regionally ranked players, as all went the full three sets.

At one, Louhabanjong (ranked 10th) defeated Howard (seventh) 5-7, 6-3, 10-2, the longest match of the day. Eaton (13th) went the distance with Wischi (17th) at two, edging her out 6-1, 2-6, 11-9. At two, Windsor (16th) got the best of Timko (14th), winning 5-7, 6-2, 10-6.

It was smooth sailing in spots four thru six for the Crimson Hawks, as McCormick beat Barr 6-0, 6-1 at four; Osborne won 6-0, 6-2 at five; and Schnaas beat Moleigh Poling 6-1, 6-0 at six.

The Crimson Hawks, now 17-6 on the year and second in the region, will wrap up their regular season on Friday with a home match against Clarion.
