INSTITUTE, WV - The Crimson Hawks swept all three doubles spots for the fourth straight match, getting No. 41 IUP off to a 3-0 lead en route to a 7-2 defeat of West Virginia State in a non-conference women's tennis match on Saturday afternoon.
It was the second win in as many days for IUP over a school from the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) after its win over Charleston yesterday. The Crimson Hawks move to 15-6 on the season, winning four straight matches and eight of their last nine overall.
Tabtip Louhaganjong and
Katie Eaton (Halesowen, United Kingdom/Haybridge), the ninth-ranked team in the Atlantic Region, paired at the number one doubles spot for an 8-6 win over Brittany Craig and Ana Juarez, the eighth-ranked team.
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and
Emilia Osborne (Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom/Cedars ) then scored an 8-2 win over Andreea Slusariuc and Jordan Kerns at two while
Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) and
Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) defeated Jana Jones and Clara McAdam 8-2 at number three.
The Crimson Hawks got the better of another regionally-ranked match in singles action, as Louhabanjong defeated Craig at number one, 7-5, 6-0. Louhabanjong got her second win of the weekend over a regionally-ranked opponent, as she's ranked 10th while Craig is ranked sixth.
IUP posted easy wins at spots four through six, as
Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park), Schnaas and Mahto, respectively, all secured victories. McCormick defeated Kerns 6-3, 6-1; Schnaas beat McAdam 6-1, 6-2; and Mahto took down Jones 6-1, 6-0. It was Schnaas' 15th singles victory of the year, which leads the team, while McCormick ran her win total to 14 on the year.
At number two, Timko was edged by Slusarciuc 6-4, 7-5 while Eaton fell in three sets in a battle of regionally-ranked players, losing to Juarez7-5, 4-6, 10-7. Eaton is ranked 13th while Juarez is 19th.
The Crimson Hawks wrap up their regular season next week, starting on Tuesday with a pair of home dual matches against Grove City and Clarion. They'll finish on Thursday by hosting West Liberty.
