Morgan Cerveny (Richfield, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) had eight kills and
Kelly Barnes (Inver Grove Heights, MN/Simley) registered 17 digs defensively but the Crimson Hawks couldn't get much going on Tuesday night as IUP fell at Malone 3-0 in non-conference women's volleyball action in Canton.
The Crimson Hawks (10-3) lost the first set in a tight one, 25-22, before losing 25-19 in the second and 25-11 in the third.
IUP held a 4-3 lead in the first until a four-point run by Malone gave the Pioneers at 7-4 lead. The Crimson Hawks came right back and with the help of errors by Malone along with a pair of kills from Megan Schneider and
Lauren Hester (State College, Pa. /State College), went on a 6-1 run to take a 10-8 lead.
It would go back-and-forth the rest of the set, with IUP holding on to a 21-20 deficit late in the match. The Pioneers (6-2) however would score three straight points which would help them close out the three-point match win.
It was a close second set with a tie score at 5-5 before IUP got a pair of kills by
Lisa Kissell (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Salem) and
Aubree Frye (Indiana/Indiana) to help the Crimson Hawks go on top 8-5. Malone would keep that deficit at three as IUP held a 15-12 lead until a four-point run put the Pioneers ahead 16-14.
Malone would continue to hold that two-point lead later in the set at 21-19 before finishing it off by scoring the final four points for the six-point win.
The score was again tight at the beginning of the third, as IUP was down just 6-5 early. The Pioneers would start to open it up with four straight points to go up 10-5 and later led 16-10 before scoring five straight and nine of the last 10 to finish off the deciding set.
Kissell finished with six kills on 12 attempts while Schneider added five kills.
Sarah Alman (Indiana/Indiana) tallied 24 assists.
The Crimson Hawks are back in action this weekend with PSAC crossover matchups against Kutztown and Cheyney on Friday and West Chester on Saturday.
