Women's Tennis Picks Up Several Wins on First Day of ITA Atlantic Regionals

CHARLESTON, WV - The doubles teams of Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) and Katie Eaton (Halesowen, United Kingdom/Haybridge) along with Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and Emilia Osborne (Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom/Cedars ) each advanced to the quarterfinals as IUP competed on the first day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional Championships on Saturday.

Schnaas and Eaton got their first win over a duo from Edinboro, winning 8-1 before an 8-6 win over a team from West Virginia State put them into the quarters. Timko and Osborne got their first win over a pairing from Davis & Elkins, blanking them 8-0 before an 8-4 victory sent them into the quarterfinal round.

Also competing in the doubles bracket was Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) and Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ), defeating a duo from Bluefield State 8-2 before falling to the top-ranked team from California 8-3.

Over in singles action, Osborne picked up a pair of victories, first defeating Laura Smith, Charleston's top player, 6-4, 2-6, 14-12. She followed that p with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over a player from Edinboro. Timko defeated Courtney Thompson of Mercyhurst 6-2, 7-6 (3) while Eaton took down Lauren Coggins of Slippery Rock 6-0, 6-4. Also with a win on Saturday was McCormick, who defeated a player from Winston-Salem 7-6 (4), 6-0. She later lost to  Ramona Czakon of Cal 6-1, 6-2. Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) got another win for IUP in singles play, defeating a player from Bluefield State 7-6 (8), 7-5.

Schnaas dropped her match to Lauren Howard of West Liberty 5-7, 6-1, 10-4; while McFail lost Raissa Wischi 6-7 (3), 6-2, 11-9.

Day two of the regional championships resumes on Sunday.
