IUP Competes in Second Day of ITA Regionals

Ericka Schnaas advanced to the semifinals of the back draw singles bracket on Sunday
CHARLESTON, WV – Several Crimson Hawks advanced to quarterfinal and semifinal matches on Sunday as IUP competed in the second day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Region Championships.

After advancing to the quarters on Saturday, the doubles team of Katie Eaton (Halesowen, United Kingdom/Haybridge) and Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) moved into the semifinals with an 8-4 victory over a team from West Liberty on Sunday. They would then fall to Lucie Rey and Lucie Sipkova of California, last weekend's PSAC champions, 8-4.

Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and Emilia Osborne (Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom/Cedars ) also advanced to the quarterfinals where they would fall today to a team from host Charleston 8-6 to end their run.

The Crimson Hawks would have five players compete in singles action on Sunday, including Eaton who moved into the quarterfinals of the main draw with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Kelsey Hensley of Charleston. She then fell in the quarterfinals to Cal's Jade Pondicas 6-4, 4-6, 10-4.

Timko also moved into the quarterfinals with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Elisabeth Yetiskul of Slippery Rock but ultimately lost to Cal's Rey in the next round, 6-2, 6-2.

Also in the main draw, Osborne lost to Mercyhurst's Caroline Bristol 6-4, 6-1.

Competing in the back draw, Schnaas moved into the semifinals on Sunday, first with an 8-0 win over Natela Portshidze of Davis & Elkins in the quarterfinals. She then defeated Emily Dawson of West Liberty 8-6 before falling in the semifinals to Ana Maria Pena of Charleston 8-4.

Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) also advanced in the back draw, moving into the quarterfinals with an 8-0 win over Marta Briales of Bluefield State. She then dropped her quarterfinal match to Cora Berna of West Virginia State 8-3.

The ITA regionals are scheduled to be completed on Monday.
