Morgan Cerveny (Richfield, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) had seven kills while
Lauren Hester (State College, Pa. /State College) added six but Edinboro was too much for IUP as the Crimson Hawks fell to the Fighting Scots in three sets in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) women's volleyball match on Friday night.
It was the Crimson Hawks first conference loss on the season, dropping to 13-5 overall, 3-1 in the PSAC.
Edinboro (5-11, 3-2) took the three sets 25-19, 25-16 and 25-23.
In the opening set, IUP held a 9-6 lead before a five-point run by Edinboro gave the Fighting Scots an 11-9 lead. The Crimson Hawks came right back with three consecutive points to go ahead 12-11 and later held a 17-16 lead after a kill from
Sarah Alman (Indiana/Indiana).
The Fighting Scots rebounded, however, scoring five straight points and four of the last five to take the five-point set win.
They'd continue their successful play in the next set, taking a 5-0 lead. Edinboro kept its lead at five, later going on top 11-6 before later going on top 16-8. A Crimson Hawks three-point run later in the set, with two service aces coming from Alman, made the score 23-16, but Edinboro scored the final two points to take the set.
Edinboro took a 4-2 lead in the third set, but IUP rallied to tie the score at 5-5. With the help of kills by Hester, Alman and
Lisa Kissell (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Salem), the Crimson Hawks went on an 8-4 run to take an 11-9 lead and force an Edinboro timeout.
Coming out of the timeout the Fighting Scots scored a pair of points to tie the score at 11-11, but IUP reeled off six straight points to go on top 17-11.
The Fighting Scots rebounded with four consecutive points of their own, and then scored five of the next seven points to take a 22-19 lead. A kill from Kissell and block by Alman and Megan Schneider brought the score back to 22-21 and later made it a 24-23 set with kills from Hester and Cerveny, but the comeback ended with one final point from the Fighting Scots.
Cerveny's seven kills came in 19 attacks, adding three total blocks. Hester also had seven digs and two aces while Alman had 18 assists and three aces.
Kelly Barnes (Inver Grove Heights, MN/Simley) finished with 12 digs.
The Crimson Hawks return to the court tomorrow with a 2:00 p.m. match at Gannon.
