Box Score
ERIE, PA - Both
Elizabeth Sova (Myerstown, Pa. /ELCO) and
Morgan Cerveny (Richfield, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) tallied eight kills apiece but it wasn't enough on Saturday as IUP lost in three sets to Gannon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West women's volleyball match.
The Golden Knights won the sets 25-13, 26-24 and 25-18.
IUP (13-5, 3-2) got behind in the first set 11-5 but capitalized on a couple Gannon errors to bring its deficit back to four at 11-7. The Golden Knights, however, responded with five straight points to jump on top by nine before a 5-1 run put them on top 21-9. The Crimson Hawks came back with a 4-1 run Gannon scored the final three points for the set win.
In the second set it was the Crimson Hawks turn to take the early lead, going on top 7-4 after a kill by Cerveny. After a quick point by Gannon, IUP reeled off four straight as Cerveny and Sova each notched kills.
Gannon got back a pair of points but IUP responded with a 4-1 run to take a 15-8 lead.
Aubree Frye (Indiana/Indiana) got two kills while Sova and
Lisa Kissell (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Salem) had the other two during the run.
The Golden Knights (13-3, 5-1) came back to score five of the next six points, cutting their deficit to three but Frye and
Ellen Fordon (Chicago, IL/Lincoln-Way East) teamed up for a block and
Lauren Hester (State College, Pa. /State College) had a kill to keep Gannon four behind at 18-14. After the Golden Knights scored four of the next five points, Sova killed two more and later got another from
Sarah Alman (Indiana/Indiana) to stay on top by three at 22-19.
A kill by Hester later gave the Crimson Hawks a 24-21 lead but they couldn't keep the momentum going as Gannon scored the game's next five points to close out the set victory.
Gannon took that streak into the third set, going up 4-1 early and later going on a 10-0 run to take a commanding 14-2 lead. IUP would chip away, scoring four of the next five points and then later going on a 5-2 run to make it an 18-11 Gannon lead.
It was later a 23-15 Gannon advantage until Hester and Frye had back-to-back kills to cut the lead to six, but the Crimson Hawks couldn't mount a comeback as the Golden Knights closed out the match win.
Sova's eight kills came on just 15 attacks while Hester finished with seven kills. Alman had 27 assists and four kills with two block assists while Fordon had five block assists and three kills. Defensively,
