LOCK HAVEN, PA – Freshman Zhané Brooks (Erie/Villa Maria) had season-highs of 20 points and eight rebounds in just 25 minutes off the bench as the IUP women's basketball team easily defeated Lock Haven 88-62 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Wednesday night.
Brooks connected on 8-of-9 shots from the field and went 4-of-4 from the foul line to go along with two steals against the Bald Eagles.
The Crimson Hawks are now 15-5 overall and 10-4 in PSAC play while the Bald Eagles drop to 6-12 and 3-11 in the conference.
The win was head coach Jeff Dow's 100th win at IUP, as he's now 100-36 in four-plus seasons at the school.
Brooks was one of four players in double-figures for the Crimson Hawks as
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) netted a season-high 19 points in her second start of the year while
Talen Watson (Odenton, MD/Arundel) and
Melanie Todd (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) each scored 10 points.
It was a tight game midway through the first half with Lock Haven holding a 13-12 lead before the Crimson Hawks went on an 18-5 run, helping them to a 38-26 halftime lead.
The Bald Eagles cut their deficit to nine at 43-34 early on in the second half but IUP responded with a 17-4 run to jump on top 60-38 with 12:29 to go in the game. The Crimson Hawks would hold steady, scoring the last eight points for the 26-point victory.
The Crimson Hawks went 31-of-39 from the foul line, connecting on 79.5 percent of their shots, well above their season average. They totaled 15 steals on the night, with four coming from
Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic), as IUP forced 25 Lock Haven turnovers.
IUP is back in action on Saturday night with a home game against rival Slippery Rock. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
