Pastorek Leads No. 12 IUP to a Big Win at East Stroudsburg

EAST STROUDSBURG, PA – Sarah Pastorek (Johnstown/Bishop McCort) scored a season-high 25 points to lead 12th-ranked IUP to a 67-49 win over East Stroudsburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) women's basketball action on Friday night at the Koehler Fieldhouse.

Pastorek reached her season-high in just 26 minutes on the court, going 7-of-13 from the field and 11-of-12 from the foul line. She also collected four rebounds and added three assists and two steals.

She also moved into 16th place in IUP history 1,149 career points, pushing past Staci Heberling, who had 1,141 points from 2005-09.

With the win the Crimson Hawks move to 10-2 on the season and 5-1 in PSAC play. ESU falls to 4-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

IUP scored the first seven points of the game, including two layups by Pastorek while she assisted on another to Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana).

The Crimson Hawks took an 11-point lead at the 13:19 mark on another layup-and-one by Pastorek, going up on the Warriors by a score of 15-4. That would help start a 7-1 run for the Crimson Hawks, who also had a three-pointer by Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) and a layup by Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic) on the run to take a 22-5 lead.

The Warriors were able to keep IUP from getting too far ahead, narrowing the gap to 15 points a few minutes later and then to 14 at 30-16 with 4:14 left in the first half. IUP responded with a three by Mathe followed by two-point baskets by Lisa Burton (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Penn Hills) and Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) over the next two minutes to take a 37-16 lead with 2:14 remaining.

ESU went on a mini-run to end the half, scoring four straight points, all from Jessica Martin, as IUP went into the half with a 37-20 lead.

The Warriors continued their momentum early in the second half, starting with an 8-4 run to cut IUP's lead to 41-28 before back-to-back layups by Fairman and Pastorek got the Crimson Hawks lead back up to 17 points at the 16:07 mark.

The Crimson Hawks again got their lead back to 20 with 13:28 on the clock as Talen Watson (Odenton, MD/Arundel) knocked down a three, making the score 51-31. IUP would build its lead to as many as 24 points the rest of the way as the Crimson Hawks eventually finished off ESU with an 18-point win.

Martin led the Warriors with 16 points and eight rebounds as ESU shot 34.8 percent (15-of-43) from the field and was forced into 21 turnovers.

Fairman and Watson each finished with eight points, making a combined four three-pointers. Fairman added a team-high six rebounds while Watson had three assists. The Crimson Hawks outrebounded ESU 35-32 and made 20-of-27 free throws as a team.

Next up for IUP is Kutztown on Saturday night with tip-off against the Golden Bears set for 5:30 p.m.
