Volleyball Falls at Gannon in Straight Sets

ERIE, PA – The IUP women's volleyball team lost in three sets at Gannon on Friday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division Matchup at the Hammermill Center.

The Crimson Hawks lost all three sets by the identical score of 25-17. They fall to 4-15 overall and 1-7 in the PSAC play. The Golden Knights improve to 11-6, 6-2.

Ericka Lentz (Reading/Holy Name) and Elizabeth Sova (Myerstown, Pa. /ELCO) each led IUP with eight kills apiece.

In the opening set, IUP rallied from an early 5-2 deficit to take a 6-5 lead on the strength of back-to-back kills by Lentz. The Crimson Hawks later held a 10-9 lead before Gannon went on an 8-1 run to take a 17-10 lead. IUP closed the gap to 20-16 but the Golden Knights closed out the set to gain the opening win.

It was a 10-10 second set tie until Gannon scored four straight to jump on top 14-10. IUP got back to within three at 18-15 but the Golden Knights scored seven of the final nine points for the win.

Gannon jumped on top 5-0 in the third set, but the Crimson Hawks fired back, going on a 10-3 run to take a two-point lead. Kelly Barnes (Inver Grove Heights, MN/Simley) highlighted the run with a pair of service aces. From there the teams traded leads before Gannon broke a 15-15 tie with seven straight point to help gain the eight-point win.

Lindsay Moeller (Troy, Mich./Troy) had 25 assists while Barnes had a team-high 14 digs.

The Crimson Hawks remain in Erie overnight and face off against Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
