KUTZTOWN, PA – The IUP women's volleyball team closed out Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Crossover play Saturday, with a win and a loss, falling to West Chester and defeating Kutztown.
The Crimson Hawks took on West Chester Saturday afternoon, losing in straight sets, 27-25, 26-24, 25-18.
The first set was a close call, with the two teams going back-and-forth on points. IUP held a lead over the Golden Rams until West Chester was able to battle back to and go on an 8-3 run to close out the set.
The second set was again close, as the Crimson Hawks were never down by more than three points.
Stephanie Kruzynski (Oxford/Oxford) and
Elizabeth Sova (Myerstown, Pa. /ELCO) each recorded 10 kills and one ace, with Sova adding two blocks.
Meghan Schneider (Lake Geneva, Wis. /Big Foot) had nine kills on 16 total attacks and two blocks.
Kelly Barnes (Inver Grove Heights, MN/Simley) led the way with 14 digs, followed by
Ericka Lentz (Reading/Holy Name) with 11.
IUP moved on to face host Kutztown in the crossover's final match Saturday evening. The Crimson Hawks claimed the five-set win 18-25, 27-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-13.
Kutztown dominated the first set, taking the first seven points and going up by as many as 11 points.
The Crimson Hawks rebounded in the third set, sticking close with the Golden Bears. IUP trailed Kutztown 22-21 but would go on a 6-3 run to claim the 27-25 victory.
IUP dropped the third set, 25-22 in yet another close call.
In the fourth set, Kutztown dominated early, quickly taking the 13-7 lead. Following a timeout, the Crimson Hawks went on an 8-5 run to battle back within three points. The match stayed close as IUP tied it at 22-22 following kills from Kruzynski,
Lily McWilliams (Rockville, Md./Thomas Sprigg Wootton) and
Lindsay Moeller (Troy, Mich./Troy). IUP took three of the next four points and sent the match to five sets.
The match-deciding fifth set was much like the previous four, with each team trading points and no clear leader. Schneider, Lentz and McWilliams would get the job done for IUP taking five of the final seven points to claim the 15-13 win.
Sova again led the way in kills, finishing with 19 as well as three blocks.
Lisa Kissell (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Salem) added 15 kills and one block, followed by Schneider with nine kills, two aces and five blocks and Kruzynski with seven kills and four blocks.
As a team, the Crimson Hawks registered 61 kills on 170 total attacks with only 34 errors.
With the victory, IUP finishes out the crossover with three wins and only one loss and improves to 7-17, 4-9 on the season. They will return home for a five-game homestand, first hosting Shepherd Tuesday at 7 p.m.
