Volleyball Falls to PSAC Rival California 3-1

INDIANA, PA – A strong start wasn't enough for the IUP women's vollyeball team, as they fell to PSAC rival California Saturday afternoon.

Winning the first set 26-24, the women took an early lead in the game. However, California would storm back and claim the next three sets to earn the 3-1 win.

In the first set, IUP took the early lead, with three straight points from Meghan Schneider (Lake Geneva, Wis. /Big Foot)'s serves. California kept it close, getting to within one point on multiple occasions. Two California errors and a kill from Ericka Lentz (Reading/Holy Name) would eventually give IUP the victory.

The Crimson Hawks fell 25-20, 25-19 and 25-18 in the following three sets. In the second set, they held the lead until California managed to tie it at 17 and went on a 9-1 scoring run to edge out IUP. The third set was very similar, with IUP holding a lead until California was able to tie it at 15.

Elizabeth Sova (Myerstown, Pa. /ELCO) finished the match with a team-leading 14 kills, followed by Lisa Kissell (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Salem) who had 11 and Lentz with eight. Schneider added four service aces and three kills.

With the loss, IUP falls to 4-13, 1-5 on the season. They will host Clarion in their home-opener Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex.
