Williams Breaks Single Game Rushing Record in Blowout Win at Shippensburg

Box Score
SHIPPENSBURG, PA – In what would end up being a record-breaking performance for De'Antwan Williams (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge) and Terrill Barnes (Gettysburg/Gettysburg), IUP wrapped up the 2013 regular season with a 42-21 road victory over Shippensburg Saturday afternoon.

Rushing for 315 yards on 39 attempts, Williams broke the school record for rushing yards in a single game, vaulting previous record holder Chris Morgan, who rushed for 286 yards against East Stroudsburg in 2006. Williams also added three touchdowns in the victory.

Grabbing six passes for 83 yards and one touchdown, Barnes passed the 1,000-yard mark in receiving for the season. He becomes the first IUP player since Carmelo Ocasio in 2002 to post 1,000 receiving yards in a single season.

The Crimson Hawks racked up 562 yards in total offense, including 356 yards on the ground. It's the most rushing yards in a single game all year for IUP and the second highest yardage total.

IUP held a 34:00-26:00 advantage in time of possession and gave up just 51 rushing yards to Shippensburg. The Crimson Hawks had five quarterback sacks on the day accounting for a loss of 60 yards.

The Crimson Hawks got into scoring position three times in the opening quarter, getting a 14-yard rushing touchdown from Erik Finklea (Cincinnati, OH/Woodward) and a two-yard Mike Box (Lawrenceville, GA/Collins Hill) to Barnes scoring toss.

Shippensburg sandwiched a 40-yard passing touchdown from Zach Zulli to Trevor Harman in between those two IUP scores as the Crimson Hawks led 14-7 after the opening quarter. They'd tack on another touchdown when Williams ran in from six yards out at the start of the second and took a 21-7 lead into halftime.

The Red Raiders made a play for the lead in the third quarter, starting off the half with another Zulli to Harman touchdown pass, this one from six yards out to make it a 21-14 game. The Crimson Hawks got field goals on back-to-back possessions, as Brett Ullman (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) nailed three-pointers from 28 and 39 yards out to keep IUP in front 27-14.

IUP caught a break leading to the second field goal, as Dorian Lane (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Woodland Hills) recovered a Shippensburg bobbled snap at its 42-yard line on a first-and-10 play.

The Red Raiders finished off the third quarter with a 12-play, 82-yard drive, resulting in a 13-yard touchdown run by Zulli to help make the score 27-21 heading into the fourth.

A botched fake field goal attempt on Shippensburg's next possession gave the Crimson Hawks great field position at their own 42-yard line. It took just two plays to score, a 20-yard run by Williams followed by a 38-yard rush for a touchdown to give IUP a two-score lead. The Crimson Hawks went for two, but their attempt would be stopped as Box's rush attempt was stopped. However a Shippensburg penalty gave IUP another chance, as backup quarterback Logan Weaver (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) found tight end Kevin Edwards (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) in the end zone to make it a 35-21 ballgame.

Williams went over the 300-yard mark and broke the school record later on in the fourth quarter, as he followed runs of 12 and four yards with a 66-yard burst for a touchdown. The score put the game out of reach for Shippensburg and capped off the scoring for the game.

Williams' rushing total stretched his season rushing yards to 1,347 yards. He also finishes the regular season with 18 rushing touchdowns, the second most ever in a single season at IUP. He now has 2,672 rushing yards in just two seasons, the fifth most in school history.

Box finished 17-for-27 through the air with 206 yards and a touchdown. In addition to Barnes' total, Sean McVay (Miami, Fla./Miramar) set career-highs with six catches for 70 yards while Pat Brewer (Coatesville/Coatesville) had five catches for 50 yards.

Zulli went 30-for-52 for 296 yards and two scores. Harman caught 12 passes for 153 and both of those touchdowns.

Carl Fleming (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) led the defensive effort with a team-high nine tackles, including 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble. Lane, Terrell Holloway (Penn Hills/Penn Hills) and James Price (Braddock/Woodland Hills) each had sacks. Akeem Smith (Philadelphia/Frankford) recovered a fumble late in the game and rumbled 77 yards. He was one of three Crimson Hawks defenders with a fumble recovery on the day.

The Crimson Hawks end the regular season with a 9-2 overall record. Sitting at No. 10 in the Division II Super Region One rankings at the beginning of the week, IUP still has an outside shot to make the NCAA postseason, with the top six teams in each region advancing to the postseason.

The 24 teams who make the Division II playoffs will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 5 p.m.
