Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) scored a career-high 35 points and tied an IUP record with seven three-pointers as the Crimson Hawks opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play with a 96-72 victory over Pitt-Johnstown in the Kovalchick Complex on Wednesday night.
Stamp scored 20 points in the first half alone as she finished the game shooting 13-of-19 from the field, including a perfect 7-of-7 from three-point range. She also added seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in 34 minutes.
The 35 points is just three shy of the program's all-time single game record of 38 points, held by Cindy Davies (vs. Clarion, 1985) and Jahzinga Tracey (vs. Shippensburg, 2007 and 2008).
The three-point record she shares with Lacey Claar (vs. Clarion, 2010) and
Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) (vs. Lock Haven, 2012).
Pitt-Johnstown jumped out to an early 8-3 lead, getting three-pointers by Kayla DeCriscio and Leah Hansen. The Crimson Hawks then used a layup by Stamp to jumpstart a 14-2 run over a span of 2:55 to take a 17-10 lead with just over 13 minutes to go in the half. Stamp scored eight of IUP's points on the run, burying a pair of threes.
The Crimson Hawks extended their lead to 12 points at 26-14 at the midway point after a three by
Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic) and kept it there heading into halftime after
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) hit a three-pointer. IUP held a 42-30 lead heading into the break.
IUP was off to another hot start in the second half, as Mathe got things going by knocking down a three-pointer. Foul shots by
Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) extended IUP's lead to 18 with 15:35 left to play before
Zhane Brooks (Erie, Pa. /Villa Maria) made it a 20-point game at 65-45 just three minutes later.
The Crimson Hawks took 24-point leads four different times in the final 11 minutes as the Lady Cats were never able to get it closer than 15 the rest of the way.
10 IUP players were able to get into the scoring column, including Fairman with 15 and
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) with 10. Stoner also grabbed eight rebounds, all on the offensive end, while Fairman had six boards, six assists and four steals. Brooks finished with eight points and eight rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench.
The Crimson Hawks shot 51.4 percent (37-of-72) from the floor and 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from three-point range. They also finished 11-of-15 at the line and outrebounded Pitt-Johnstown 46-to-36.
IUP is now a perfect 3-0 this year, including a 1-0 mark in PSAC play. Pitt-Johnstown falls to 1-2 and 0-1.
The Crimson Hawks are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Clarion to face the Golden Eagles. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
