Women’s Basketball Cruises to 25-Point Win at Clarion

CLARION, PA – Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help IUP to an easy 70-45 win at Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) women's basketball action on Saturday night.

Stamp finished 8-of-14 from the floor, including 3-of-6 from three-point range, with two assists and a block in 30 minutes of action.

The Crimson Hawks improve to 4-0 on the season, including a 2-0 mark in PSAC play. Clarion drops to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) nearly notched her second double-double of the season with 11 points and nine rebounds, going 7-of-8 from the foul line. Zhane Brooks (Erie, Pa. /Villa Maria) came off the bench to score nine points and grab four rebounds, all on the offensive end, along with two blocks in just 15 minutes.

Clarion held a 10-9 lead at the 13:09 mark of the first half. The Crimson Hawks then reeled off 11 consecutive points, including three straight buckets by Zhane Brooks (Erie, Pa. /Villa Maria), to take a 20-10 lead with 8:39 to go in the first half.

IUP stretched its lead to 13 points at 25-12 with a three-pointer by Stamp with under six minutes to play before going on top by 18 with 2:04 left on the clock. The Crimson Hawks went into the half with a 13-point lead at 33-20.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Stamp and Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana), along with a traditional three-point by Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) and a pair of free throws by Stoner helped IUP build a 46-24 lead with just under 16 minutes to go in the game.

Buckets by Talen Watson (Odenton, MD/Arundel) and Stamp put the Crimson Hawks on top by 27 at 54-27, where they kept the lead for much of the remainder of the game. The Golden Eagles could only get as close as 22 points the rest of the way as IUP closed out the 25-point blowout win.

Clarion entered the game averaging nearly 85 points a game, but was limited to a 29.8 field goal percentage, including 4-of-14 from three-point range. Just one player – Raven Jones – scored in double-figures for the Golden Eagles.

Eight players saw at least 13 minutes of time on the court for IUP, as nine Crimson Hawks found the scoring column.

Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) had a career-high 11 rebounds to go along with five points and two steals. Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) had seven points and six rebounds while Talen Watson (Odenton, MD/Arundel) had six points off the bench.

The Crimson Hawks return to the court on Tuesday when they travel to New York to face Dowling in non-conference action. Tipoff from Oakdale is set for 5 p.m.
