Second Half Surge Lifts Crimson Hawks Past Dowling

OAKDALE, NY – The IUP women's basketball team broke a halftime tie by outscoring Dowling by 14 points in the second half en route to a 66-52 non-conference win on Saturday night.

The Crimson Hawks' Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) led all scorers with 20 points, her fifth 20-point game to start the season.

IUP improved to 5-0 on the season while Dowling, which began the season ranked 16th in the nation, fell to 0-2. The Golden Lions other loss on the year was to No. 1 ranked Bentley.

The Crimson Hawks scored the game's first 14 points, highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers by Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) and Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana). Dowling battled back, going on a 13-2 run over a 4:52 span to cut IUP's lead to 16-13 at the midway point of the first half.

Dowling would tie the score at 23-23 less than four minutes later after a pair of free throws and took a two-point lead on a layup by Kamille Ejerta with 5:30 to go before halftime. Mathe and Talen Watson (Odenton, MD/Arundel) drilled a pair of three-pointers in the final minute for IUP and another triple by Dowling's Kristina Surlan at the buzzer made it a 34-34 ball game at the break.

The Crimson Hawks came out hot in the second half, getting three straight buckets by Stamp, including a three-pointer, plus another triple by Stapleton to go on top 44-34 less than three minutes in. Dowling was able to get its deficit back to four at 51-47 with 7:18 to go.

Dowling got it down to three points twice more, with the last time being 55-52 with five minutes to go, before the Crimson Hawks finished things off with 11 straight points to wrap up the game. Eight of IUP's last 11 points came from the free throw line.

Stamp played in 37 minutes, finishing 6-of-15 from the field and 7-of-9 from the foul line. She added four rebounds and three steals.

Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) scored eight points and tied a career-high with 13 rebounds, including six on the offensive end. Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) scored 10 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists while Talen Watson (Odenton, MD/Arundel) came off the bench to score a season-high 10 points in 20 minutes. Mathe also scored eight points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists.

The Crimson Hawks outrebounded Dowling 43-22 and outshot the Golden Lions 44.9 percent to 31.9 percent.

IUP is back in action next Monday, traveling to West Virginia to take on Shepherd.
