INDIANA, PA – The Crimson Hawks shot 63.0 percent and scored 43 points in the first half as the IUP women's basketball team defeated Millersville 70-50 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) non-divisional action on Tuesday night at the Kovalchick Complex.
IUP held a 43-24 lead over the Marauders at halftime as the big lead helped the Crimson Hawks improve their record to 7-1 overall on the season.
Millersville fell to 4-4 overall.
Eight different players scored in the first half for the Crimson Hawks, with 13 coming from
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep). IUP converted 17-of-27 shots from the floor, including 6-of-10 from three-point range.
The Crimson Hawks never trailed on the night, jumping out to a 17-6 lead with 12:56 to go in the first half. An 8-0 run to get to that point was capped off by a fast break layup by
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana). After Millersville cut its deficit to four with 8:30 to go, IUP scored another eight straight points with Stapleton jumpstarting this run with a three-pointer.
IUP finished the half with a 14-5 run, leading by as many as 22 points before heading into the locker room with a 19-point advantage.
The Crimson Hawks kept their lead in the 20's for the first four minutes of the second half with the help of buckets by Stamp and
Talen Watson (Odenton, MD/Arundel). The Marauders reeled off the next seven points to make it a 47-34 game with 14:21 to play, but efficient play 13 different Crimson Hawks kept Millersville at bay and the big lead intact.
Stamp finished with a game-high 15 points, the first time all season that she's been held under the 20-point mark. She went 6-of-12 from the floor and added eight rebounds and two blocks in 26 minutes.
Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) scored nine points, going 3-of-4 from three-point range, and dished out seven assists while
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) scored 12 points in 18 minutes. Getting her first career start,
Zhane Brooks (Erie, Pa. /Villa Maria) scored five points and grabbed a season-high nine rebounds in 24 minutes. Stapleton came off the bench to score eight points, going 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.
In all, nine different players contributed to the scoring column for IUP.
Despite 20 turnovers, the Crimson Hawks outrebounded Millersville 39-to-36 and finished the game shooting 50.9 percent from the floor.
IUP is back in action tomorrow with another PSAC crossover as the Crimson Hawks host Shippensburg (7-1) on Wednesday night. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
