INDIANA, PA – In a battle of two of the top teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), IUP easily defeated Shippensburg 70-49 in women's basketball action on Wednesday night at the Kovalchick Complex.
Each team came in with identical 7-1 overall records, while the Crimson Hawks had a 2-1 mark in the PSAC West and Shippensburg was 3-0 in the East.
For the first time all year, four players scored in double figures for IUP, which was led by
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson), who scored a season-high 16 points.
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) added 14 while
Talen Watson (Odenton, MD/Arundel) chipped in 11 and
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) came off the bench to scored 13.
Shippensburg (7-2) entered the game riding a six-game winning streak in which it scored 90 points on three different occasions. The Raiders owned the second-best scoring offense in the PSAC with 82.4 points per game and had the conference's number two scorer in Stephanie Strybuc at 21.0 points per contest.
Boasting the PSAC's top scoring defense, the Crimson Hawks forced the Raiders to shoot 34.0 percent from the floor, their second-worst performance of the season, and allowed just 18 first half points. Strybuc, although reaching the career 1,000-point milestone in the second half, scored just 12 points on 4-of-12 shooting.
IUP (8-1) scored the game's first seven points and later used a six minute scoring draught by the Raiders to go on a 12-0 run and take a 23-5 lead at the midway point of the first half. The Crimson Hawks got points from four different players on the run, including five from
Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center). IUP built an advantage of 19 points before going into halftime with a controlling 34-18 lead.
The Crimson Hawks took a 20-point lead at 43-23 after a three-pointer by Stamp at the 16:27 mark of the second half. Shippensburg cut its deficit to 16 points – its closest the rest of the way – with 14:26 to go, but IUP responded with another trey by Stamp to go back on top by 19.
The lead for IUP hovered around 20 points the rest of the way as the Crimson Hawks gave playing time to a total of 13 players in the 21-point win.
The Crimson Hawks turned the ball over just nine times on the night, a season-low, while outrebounding Shippensburg 43-to-31. Stoner just missed her second double-double of the year with nine boards while she also collected two blocks and went 7-of-9 from the field in 28 minutes.
Watson also dished out a game-high five assists and Fairman finished with seven points, five rebounds and a career-high six steals.
The Crimson Hawks are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Kutztown to face the Golden Bears (5-4). Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
