INDIANA, PA – The Crimson Hawks won 10 of the 13 total events as the IUP men's swimming team defeated Wheeling Jesuit 156-84 in the Winter Sprint Invitational on Thursday afternoon at the Pidgeon Natatorium.
Steve Long (Greensburg/Hempfield) and
Chris Strauss (Allentown/Parkland) each won a pair of events on the day. Long took first in the 50 and 100 yard butterfly with times of 23.00 and 50.80, respectively. Strauss won the 100 yard free style in 49.81 and the 200 yard freestyle in 1:48.68.
Also posting individual wins were
Paul Singerman (Apollo/Kiski) in the 50 yard backstroke (25.47);
Zach Fountain (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) in the 50 yard breaststroke (26.90);
Alex Cummings (Altoona/Altoona) in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:00.76);
Brandon Hopkins (Marion, VA/Marion) in the 500 free (4:52.51); and
Andrew Richey (Warminster/William Tennent) in the 50 free (22.35).
The 200 yard medley relay team of Singerman, Fountain, Long and Richey also took first with a time of 1:36.06.
Alex Plimpton (Harrison City/Penn-Trafford) and
Ben Adams (Katy, TX/Cypress Springs) both pulled in a pair of second place finishes in the 200 and 500 free and the 50 free and 50 yard butterfly, respectively. Hopkins also added two second place finishes in the 100 fly and 100 breast.
Other swimmers with second place finishes were Singerman in the 100 yard backstroke,
Bobby Sciscento (Lancaster/Manheim Township) in the 50 back, Cummings in the 50 breast.
This was IUP's final action of 2013 as the Crimson Hawks return to the pool on Jan. 12 when they compete in the South Florida Relays.
