Crimson Hawks Roll to Win at Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV – 10 different players scored for the Crimson Hawks as IUP easily defeated Shepherd 78-53 in non-conference women's basketball action on Monday night.

The win was the Crimson Hawks' sixth straight to start the season while Shepherd fell to 1-5 on the season.

Three players scored in double-figures for IUP, including Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) with 20 points, Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) with 12 and Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) with 10. It was the sixth straight game with 20-plus points for Stamp, who leads the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in scoring with 22.8 points per game.

The Crimson Hawks held an early 12-6 lead over Shepherd before a layup by Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic) at the 10:57 mark started a 21-2 run over a 5:17 span as IUP took command early. The Crimson Hawks went on top by 26 just a few minutes later and led by as many as 27 during the first half before taking a 44-19 lead into the locker room.

IUP continued its strong showing by starting the second half on an 11-1 run, as a jumper by Stamp at the 17:17 mark gave the Crimson Hawks a 55-20 advantage. The Rams would try to battle back, going on a 21-8 run, but would only be able to cut their deficit to 20 points as IUP cruised to a 25-point win.

Stamp finished 10-of-15 from the field, adding eight rebounds and three steals in 29 minutes of action. Mathe scored her 12 points in just 18 minutes, going 4-of-8 from three-point range with five rebounds.

Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) scored nine points, grabbed four rebounds and had three assists. It was the first time in the last 47 games that she finished without a steal.

IUP shot 46.8 percent from the floor compared to just 27.5 percent for Shepherd. The Crimson Hawks went 16-of-30 from the floor in the first half but just 13-of-32 in the second. Both teams combined for 44 turnovers, with 24 coming from the Rams.

The Crimson Hawks return to PSAC play this weekend when they travel to Greensburg to face Seton Hill. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
