AT A GLANCE
In a battle for PSAC tournament positioning, the Crimson Hawks host rival California in a key matchup on Wednesday night at the KCAC. IUP is coming off of a win over Clarion on Saturday and has won 4 of its last 5 games overall. The Vulcans have won 5 of 6 games and are coming off of an 81-73 upset win over then-No. 6 Gannon this past weekend.
LAST TIME OUT
So. G
Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) knocked down 4 three-pointers and So. G
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) tallied a team-high 18 points as the Crimson Hawks held off Clarion for a 67-60 win on Saturday night. IUP held a 29-23 halftime lead and overcame a 15-point, 20-rebound game by Hannah Heeter for the victory. Mathe finished with 17 points while Fr. F Zhané Brooks added 11 points and 9 rebounds off the bench.
FIRST MEETING
The Crimson Hawks limited the Vulcans to a 27.8 FG% (20-72) en route to a 59-47 road win back on Jan. 16. Four players scored in double-figures for IUP, with Sr. F
Sarah Pastorek (Johnstown/Bishop McCort) posting her 2nd double-double of the year with 16 points and 11 rebounds, adding 3 blocks on the night. The Crimson Hawks totaled 50 rebounds on the night as Cal connected on just 4-22 from beyond the three-point line.
COUNTING ON BROOKS
Receiving increased playing time over the last five games, Brooks has delivered by averaging 9.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. She had her best game of the year against Lock Haven with 20 points and 8 boards and nearly had a double-double on Saturday with 11 and 9. Last week's PSAC Freshman of the Week, Brooks has a 61.5 FG% in 21.6 mpg over the last 5 games.
CLINCHING A SPOT
With their win over Slippery Rock on Feb. 2, IUP clinched a spot in the PSAC tournament in March. The newly expanded tournament format will feature 6 teams from each division and will begin on Sat. March 2. It will be the 8th straight year IUP has reached the postseason.
HITTING THE “3”
The Crimson Hawks are one of the best three-point shooting teams in the PSAC, converting at a 34.4 pct (132-384) clip through 23 games. With 5.7 made per game, they're on pace to threaten the school's all-time mark 3's in a season of 184 in 2004-05. At this current rate they'll need 33 games to do so but with a 28-game regular season and an expanded PSAC tournament and potential NCAA postseason run, this team record could fall this year.
THE HEAD COACH
Jeff Dow (Oregon, '88) is in his fifth season as the head coach at IUP, leading the Crimson Hawks to a pair of NCAA tournaments (2009, 2012) and a PSAC championship during a 26-6 debut season in 2008-09. Last Wednesday Dow eclipsed 100 wins in his IUP head coaching career (102-37) and has an overall record of 214-102.
