INDIANA, PA –
Anthony Wells (Cleveland, OH/Shaker Heights) netted a career-high 21 points to lead four players in double-figures as the 11th-ranked IUP men's basketball team defeated rival California 70-53 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Wednesday night.
With the win the Crimson Hawks increase their lead in the West to two games with a 15-3 conference record while the Vulcans drop to 8-10 in the league.
Prior to the game IUP athletics honored Darryl Webb by retiring his number 15, the first player in the program's history to receive such a distinction. The 2011 Division II Player of the Year, Webb was a two-time All-American and is IUP's all-time leader in career points (1,949), rebounds (1,214), and blocked shots (136). He led IUP to three NCAA tournament appearances, two PSAC titles, trips to the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight and an appearance in the 2010 national championship game.
In the game, the Crimson Hawks got out to a quick 13-3 lead and held off a late Cal run to take a 27-17 lead into the break.
IUP extended its lead to 14 on a three-pointer by
Marcel Souberbielle (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American School) to take a 37-23 lead with 16:51 left to play. The Vulcans climbed to within eight points with 6:19 left to play but the Crimson Hawks finished the game on a 17-8 run for the easy win.
Wells finished an efficient 7-of-11 from the floor, draining 5-of-8 three-point attempts. He added five assists and a pair of steals in 30 minutes of work.
Souberbielle added 15 points, going 3-of-5 from three-point range while
Mathis Keita (Thionville, France/Insep) and
Josh Wiegand (Whiteford, MD/John Carroll) each dropped in 10 points.
The Crimson Hawks return to the court on Saturday when they travel to Erie to take on Mercyhurst. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
