Women’s Tennis Falls to Carnegie Mellon in Spring Opener

MONROEVILLE, PA – The IUP women's tennis team fell to Carnegie Mellon, the fifth-ranked team in Division III, 8-1 in its spring season opener on Sunday afternoon at the Monroeville Club for Life.

Crimson Hawks were swept in doubles action, with Katie Eaton (Halesowen, United Kingdom/Haybridge) and Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) falling at No. 1 to Katie Cecil and Angela Pratt 8-3. At No. 2 Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) and Emilia Osborne (Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom/Cedars ) lost 8-3 to Chelsea Motie and Bryn Raschke while Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) and Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) lost to Abbey Hamstra and Brooke Tsu 8-4.

In singles action, McCormick got the Crimson Hawks only win of the afternoon with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Elizabeth Martin at the No. 3 spot.

At No. 6, Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) took Lydia Utkin to the brink, eventually falling 4-6, 6-4, 11-9. At No. 1 Timko fell to Cecil 7-5, 6-4 while Eaton lost to Motie 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2. Pratt got the best of Osborne 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4, Schnaas lost to Hamstra 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5.

The Crimson Hawks return to the court on March 2 as they hit the road to play Denison in Ohio.
