INDIANA, PA – Despite a double-double from freshman Zhané Brooks (Erie/Villa Maria) and 18 points by
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) the Crimson Hawks fell in a tough defensive effort to No. 22 Edinboro 57-45 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West women's basketball action on Wednesday night.
The loss drops IUP to 19-7 overall and 14-6 in the conference, still in sole possession of third place in the PSAC West with two games to go in the regular season. The Fighting Scots improve to 19-5 overall and 16-4 in conference play, which is second in the division.
Brooks finished with 10 points and a season-high 11 rebounds in 28 minutes off the bench, going 4-of-4 from the foul line. Five of her11 boards were on the offense end and she added three steals defensively.
Stamp went 6-of-16 from the field, including 2-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-8 from the charity stripe. She added seven rebounds and three steals in 31 minutes.
It was back-and-forth early in the game with IUP twice holding three-point leads in the first 6:20 of action. After exchanging leads throughout the middle of the half, Edinboro took a six-point lead at 22-16 with 3:15 to go before ultimately taking a 26-20 lead into halftime.
The Fighting Scots came out hot in the second half to go up by 11 but IUP calmed down and got it back to six at 31-25 just a little over two minutes in. A 10-2 run by Edinboro followed and the Fighting Scots were able to keep their lead around 14 throughout the middle of the half.
Stamp started a 7-0 Crimson Hawks run with a three-pointer as IUP got the game to within seven at 47-40 with 5:40 left to play. However that would be the closest they'd get as the Fighting Scots followed with seven straight of their own and would go on to the 12-point win.
The Crimson Hawks racked up 52 rebounds compared to Edinboro's 39 but made just 12 of their 62 shots. They also limited the Fighting Scots to a poor shooting night as they went 18-of-55.
IUP will play in its final road game of the regular season on Saturday at Slippery Rock. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
