SLIPPERY ROCK, PA –
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) led the way with 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists as IUP ran away from rival Slippery Rock in a 74-48 win in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Crimson Hawks improve to 20-7 overall, their second consecutive 20-win season and third in five years under Head Coach Jeff Dow. It's also IUP's fifth 20-win season in the last five years.
IUP also clinches the third seed in the PSAC West in the upcoming conference tournament with a 15-6 record. The Crimson Hawks will host sixth-seeded Mercyhurst in the opening round on Saturday, March 2.
It wasn't a good start for either team in this game as they shot a combined 6-of-26 in the contest's first 8:17. With the game tied at 10-10 the Crimson Hawks attempted to gain control with a 9-3 run as
Alexis Aiken (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Allegheny) and Zhané Brooks scoring the bulk of those points for IUP. The Rock would close their gap to two points but IUP finished on an 8-1 run to head into halftime with a 31-24 lead.
The Crimson Hawks came out strong in the second half, scoring eight straight points in the paint to take a 39-24 lead.
Slippery Rock closed the gap to 10 on a three-pointer by D'Asia Chambers at the 15:35 mark but IUP responded with a 14-0 run to take a commanding 56-32 lead just four minutes later. Six different Crimson Hawks scored on the run as
Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic) capped it off with a three at the 11:00 mark.
IUP kept its lead around 20 for the rest of the game with The Rock getting no closer than 17 en route to the 26-point victory.
Stamp finished 7-of-15 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the free throw line as she finished one rebound shy of a double-double for the second straight game.
Brooks went 5-of-7 from the field and had three steals while Wareham finished with 11 points and Stoner added 10.
The victory was also the 12th straight for the Crimson Hawks over Slippery Rock, a run dating back to the 2006-07 season.
IUP will wrap up its regular season schedule next Wednesday on Senior Night as the Crimson Hawks host Lock Haven. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
