Women’s Tennis Loses to Ninth-Ranked California in Battle of Top Teams in Atlantic Region

CALIFORNIA, PA – In a match that was moved outdoors due to cooperative weekend weather, the IUP women's tennis team lost to ninth-ranked California 8-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West season-opener.

The match featured the top two teams in the Atlantic Region polls as the Vulcans are ranked first.

The 35th-ranked Crimson Hawks (2-4, 0-1) took an early lead as the doubles team of Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) and Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) blew past Maxime Colen and Elizabeth Guy 8-1 at number three. The Vulcans knotted the score with an 8-3 win at two as Ramona Czakon and Alexandra Borgenhoff defeated Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and Emilia Osborne (Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom/Cedars ).

The eighth-ranked team of Lucie Rey and Lucie Sipkova then defeated Katie Eaton (Halesowen, United Kingdom/Haybridge) and Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) 8-3 at number one.

In singles action, Jade Pondicas had Cal's first win with a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Schnaas at five. 21st-ranked Borgenhoff defeated McCormick 6-2, 6-1 at three before 31st-ranked Sipkova won 6-3, 6-0 over Timko at one.

Rey, the 41st-ranked player in the nation, picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Osborne at four while Czakon defeated Eaton 6-3, 6-1 at two and Colen beat McFail 6-4, 7-6 at six.

The Crimson Hawks return to the courts on Saturday when they travel to Philadelphia to take on Chestnut Hill.
