No. 35 Crimson Hawks Hand Mercyhurst Second Loss of the Year

ERIE, PA – IUP picked up four wins in singles action to help secure a 6-3 victory over Mercyhurst in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West women's tennis action on Tuesday afternoon at the Penn Briar Athletic Club.

The victory was the fourth in a row for the Crimson Hawks who improve their overall record to 7-6 on the year and even their PSAC West mark at 1-1. It was just the second loss all season for the Lakers as they fall to 10-2 and 0-1.

The Crimson Hawks took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, picking up wins at the two and three spots.

Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and Emilia Osborne (Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom/Cedars ) paired for an 8-4 victory over Courtney Thompson and Rebecca Haener at number two while Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) and Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) defeated Taylor Wedlake and Jenna Raynor 8-1 in the third spot. At number one Mercyhurst's Caroline Bristol and Sarah Baich, the sixth-ranked team in the region, defeated Katie Eaton (Halesowen, United Kingdom/Haybridge) and Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) 8-1. Eaton and Schnaas are ranked eighth in the region.

In a battle of regionally ranked players at the number one singles spot, Bristol (sixth) got the best of Eaton (10th) 6-0, 6-3. Timko, the sixth-ranked player in the region, scored a 6-2, 6-2 victory at number two over Thompson while Mercyhurst's Haener – ranked 17th – defeated McCormick 7-5, 6-4.

Osborne, ranked 13th in the region, defeated Baich 7-5, 6-4 at number four while Schnaas rallied for a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Wedlake at number five. Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) wrapped up the scoring with a 6-0, 6-2 win at number six over Katelyn Caniford.

The Crimson Hawks take their four-match winning streak to Ohio for matches against Wayne State on Thursday and Grand Valley State on Friday.
