Women’s Tennis Edges Grand Valley State in Battle of Nationally Ranked Squads

Katie Eaton had the clinching victory in a three-set thriller at the number one spot.

AKRON, OH – Katie Eaton (Halesowen, United Kingdom/Haybridge) scored a three-set win in the final match of the day to lift the IUP women's tennis team to a 5-4 victory over Grand Valley State at the Tow Path Tennis Club in Akron.

Eaton's victory came at the number one spot, defeating Niki Shipman 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 with the match tied 4-4.

The win was the sixth in a row for the 44th-ranked Crimson Hawks as they improve to 9-6. 42nd-ranked Grand Valley falls to 22-5 overall.

IUP rallied from a 4-3 deficit in singles play, with Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) coming back to defeat Morgan Patterson 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 at number six. Getting the Crimson Hawks other singles win was Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) who beat Leah Dancz 6-1, 7-5 at number two.

Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) fell at number three to Lexi Rice 6-2, 7-5, while Emilia Osborne (Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom/Cedars ) lost to Claire Cooper 7-5, 7-5 at four and Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) lost to Kali Phillips 6-, 6-3 at number five.

IUP jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play as Timko and Osborne started things out with an 8-5 win over Dancz and Allison Fecko at number two. Eaton and Schnaas scored IUP's other win at number one over Katelyn Schaffer and Rice, winning 8-5. Kali Phillips and Cooper got a win for the Lakers at number three, defeating Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) and McCormick 8-5.

The Crimson Hawks return to conference play this weekend as they host Edinboro on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
